Ultrasound - Sonomammogram (also called Breast Ultrasound) is a non-invasive imaging test used to evaluate the breast tissues using high-frequency sound waves. It is commonly used as an adjunct to mammography, especially in women with dense breast tissue.
What it checks:
Breast lumps or swelling
Cysts, fibroadenomas (non-cancerous tumors)
Infections or abscesses
Suspicious or cancerous lesions
Nipple discharge evaluation
Lymph nodes in the underarm (axilla)
Breast implants (ruptures, leaks)
Why it’s done:
Breast pain, lump, or thickening
Abnormal mammogram findings
For women under 40 (dense breast tissue)
Pregnancy or breastfeeding (safe and radiation-free)
Routine screening in high-risk women
To guide biopsies (FNAC/core biopsy)
