A pregnancy ultrasound uses sound waves to visualize the baby, placenta, amniotic fluid, and mother’s uterus. It is safe, painless, and commonly done to monitor the baby’s growth and development throughout pregnancy.
What it checks:
Early pregnancy: Gestational sac, fetal heartbeat, ectopic pregnancy
Baby’s growth & age: Crown-rump length, biparietal diameter, head & abdominal measurements
Fetal organs & structures: Brain, spine, heart, kidneys, limbs (especially during NT & TIFFA scan)
Placenta: Position (anterior/posterior), placenta previa, maturity
Amniotic fluid levels
Baby’s position & movements
Multiple pregnancy (twins/triplets)
Cervix length and uterine health
Why it’s done:
Confirm pregnancy and fetal heartbeat
Check baby’s growth and due date
Detect anomalies or complications (TIFFA/Level 2 scan)
Vaginal bleeding, pain, or suspected miscarriage
Monitor placenta, amniotic fluid, or baby’s position in late pregnancy
High-risk pregnancies, IVF, diabetes, hypertension
NOTE: Revealing gender is legally prohibited in India under PC & PNDT Act.
