Ultrasound – KUB (Kidneys, Ureters, and Bladder) is a non-invasive abdominal ultrasound used to evaluate the urinary tract, especially the kidneys and bladder. While ureters are not routinely visualised unless dilated, this scan is crucial for detecting a variety of urological conditions.
What it checks:
Kidneys - stones, swelling (hydronephrosis), cysts, infections, tumors
Ureters - dilation or blockage due to stones or obstruction
Bladder - wall thickness, stones, tumors, urine retention
Post-void residue (if measured) - checks remaining urine after urination
Why it’s done:
Flank or lower abdominal pain
Burning urination or recurrent urinary infections (UTI)
Suspected kidney or bladder stones
Blood in urine (hematuria)
Urinary retention or difficulty passing urine
Follow-up for kidney diseases or post-surgery evaluation
