Doppler - Placental/Fetal (also known as Obstetric Doppler Ultrasound) is a specialized prenatal test that evaluates blood flow in the uterus, placenta, umbilical cord, and fetal vessels. It helps assess the well-being of the fetus and placental function, especially in high-risk pregnancies.
What it checks:
Umbilical artery blood flow - from placenta to baby
Middle cerebral artery (MCA) - blood flow to baby’s brain
Uterine arteries - blood supply from mother to placenta
Placental resistance or insufficiency
Early signs of fetal distress, growth restriction (IUGR)
Why it’s done:
High-risk pregnancy (diabetes, hypertension, twins)
Low baby weight or slow growth (IUGR)
Decreased fetal movements
Placental insufficiency or previous pregnancy complications
To monitor baby’s well-being in late pregnancy
Abnormal amniotic fluid levels or high BP in mother
NOTE: Revealing gender is legally prohibited in India under PC & PNDT Act.
